Therapy: An Investment in your Mental Health

So, is therapy really worth the time and money it takes? This is a great question! There are many factors to consider before starting therapy.

First, find the right therapist for YOU. Your friend’s therapist might be awesome for her, but not quite right for you. Take the time to find the right fit for your personality, needs and goals. This may take some time! I offer a free 10 minute phone consultation, which helps us both understand if we are right for each other when it comes to mental health needs.

Some factors to consider when looking for a therapist are:

  1. Is it affordable? I realize this is so important because therapy is as much a financial investment as it is an emotional one. Making sure you can afford this journey you’re starting is important in meeting your goals.

  2. Is it close or a reasonable driving distance? No one wants to get stuck in traffic or be stressed on the way to or from therapy! Be realistic about drive time.

  3. Does the therapist have experience or expertise in the area I’m seeking services for? If you’re looking for general mental health services, you’re in luck; there are a lot of therapists to choose from! However, if you’re experiencing debilitating depression or anxiety, you may want to narrow your search to a therapist who can help you in this area in particular.

  4. Do we “click”? This factor is probably the hardest to know right off the bat or via a phone consultation. Most therapists have a bio on their website or psychology today. Read it and make sure you like what they have to say! And then, make an appointment and see how it goes. If you know right away that it is not going to work with that individual, keep searching. Goodness of fit is so important in meeting your mental health needs.

Time is precious! I get it. Make sure you’re ready to invest the money, time, and heart it takes to start and continue your mental health journey. If you’re ready to start and have questions, let’s chat!
